It has been the best of times and the worst of times the last two days for the Ft. Zumwalt West girls basketball team.
West lost two key bench players to injury – Katie McFadden (ankle) and Devon Anzalone (eye) – during Tuesday’s practice. Then starting point guard Raylyn Nuss was involved in a car accident Tuesday night.
But a short-handed West, without McFadden or Anzalone, regrouped in time to pull out a 46-43 win over Oakville in the Class 5 sectional at Meramec on Wednesday. Anna Hackman led West with 13 points and Nuss, still sore from the accident, added 12.
The biggest lead in the game was just seven points, but a 3-pointer from Nuss and clutch free throws from Kelsey Jones helped West (24-4 overall) secure the win.
“It wasn’t a pretty game on our end,” West coach Monica Tritz said. “We kept battling and we played better defense in the second half.”
Andrea Boone scored 16, Maggie Zehner 12 and Leslie DeGonia 11 for Oakville (15-13).
West will play Hazelwood Central in the quarterfinals at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at UM-St. Louis on Saturday. Tritz said she expects both McFadden and Anzalone to be back for the game.
Parkway North 42, Poplar Bluff 36: The Vikings outscored the Mules 19-4 in the fourth quarter to earn the comeback victory at the Farmington Civic Center. The comeback erased a 24-14 halftime deficit.
Kianna Hogan and Alexis Sutton each scored 10 for North (26-2). North will play Nerinx Hall in the Class 5 quarterfinals at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday at UM-St. Louis.
North is ranked No. 9 in both the Post-Dispatch and state Class 5 polls.
Nerinx Hall 41, St. Joseph's 37 — Kirsti Yess scored a team-high 13 points as the Markers (22-7) won their 10th consecutive game and advanced to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive season.
St. Joseph's (19-10), which got 18 points off the bench from freshman Morgan Stock, is ranked sixth among area large schools.
Nerinx Hall, which is ranked eighth, will play either Parkway North (25-2) or Poplar Bluff (16-11) in the quarterfinals at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at UMSL.
Miller Career Academy 46, McCluer South-Berkeley 34: The Phoenix got revenge after the Bulldogs ended their season in districts last year. Miller (22-6) jumped out to a 19-12 lead and never looked back.
Rashonda Willis led Miller with 15 points and Ciara Leak added 13. Miller will play St. Dominic in the Class 4 quarterfinals at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at Lindenwood.
Monai Douglass led Berkeley with 10 points. The Bulldogs ended their season at 18-12.
Sullivan 66, Notre Dame 40: The Eagles doubled up the Rebels in the first half to take a 36-18 lead at halftime and cruised to the win. Notre Dame, who finished fourth in Class 4 last season, never threatened in the second half.
Hailee Parks scored a game-high 28 for Sullivan and Carissa Richardson added 16. Sullivan (23-3), the No. 6 team in the Class 4 state poll, will play No. 1 Dexter in the quarterfinals at Farmington on Saturday.
Ashley Giffin scored 10 points to lead Notre Dame. The Rebels ended their season with a 16-13 record
