SLUH claims lacrosse title

SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH

Rockhurst's Tony Trabon (right) tries to slow down SLUH's Robbie Fonke during the first half of Saturday's game at the Anheuser-Busch Center.

FENTON – Chants of “We want the Funk” could be heard from the SLUH student section moments after the Division I Lacrosse championship game at Soccer Park.

Or was that, “We want the Fonke?”

SLUH’s Robbie Fonke took a pass from Andrew Howe and skipped the ball past the Rockhurst goalkeeper with 1:18 left in overtime to give the Jr. Billikens an 11-10 win and the school’s first state lacrosse championship.

“It’s unbelievable,” Fonke said. “I didn’t expect to have an opening.”

Fonke’s heroics would not have been possible without a fourth quarter comeback and the standout play of SLUH goalkeeper Chris Saville. SLUH trailed 9-6 with 9:16 left in the fourth quarter, but two goals from Brian Hof and another by Howe tied the game at 9-9. Rockhurst made it 10-9, but Hof tied it with 1:21 left.

Saville kept SLUH in it with 15 saves. His best came in overtime when he robbed a Rockhurst attacker at point blank range.

“I didn’t even see it, I just got lucky,” Saville said. “It went off the inside of my foot.”

Saville was named the game’s MVP.

“He just played out of his mind,” SLUH coach Ron Kelam said. “He proved today that he is an all-state goalie.”

SLUH (14-2 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from R.J. Half and Howe. Rockhurst responded with two goals to tie it at the end of the first quarter.

Rockhurst (14-2) jumped on top early in the second quarter. SLUH responded with goals by Half and Hof, but goals by Brenden Surface and Will Tilson gave Rockhurst a 5-4 lead with 2:18 left in the half.

The Hawklets struck again with just one second left in the half on a goal from Jack Faerber from Surface to make it 6-4.

The teams traded goals in the third as Rockhurst took an 8-6 lead. Rockhurst made it 9-6 early in the fourth before the SLUH comeback.

“We’re blessed with good athletes and kids who are warriors out there,” Kelam said. “In the fourth quarter, they did what leaders and warriors do – they strapped the team to their back.”

In the Division II final, Pembroke Hill needed a furious fourth quarter comeback to beat Eureka 6-5.

Pembroke Hill (14-2) scored three times in 1:22 in the fourth quarter to erase a 5-2 deficit. Jacob Sinclair scored the game-winner for the Raiders 1:55 left in the fourth. He scored a game-high four goals.

Ryan Gardner scored three goals for Eureka (13-3). Mathew Vollmer and Henry Tellini also scored for the Wildcats.
