Friday roundup

11/07/2009

DeSmet 42, Zumwalt West 6 — Malcolm Agnew got the Spartans (11-0) off to a quick start, scoring three times in the first quarter.

Agnew scored on runs of 31, 15 and 27 yards in the first quarter, and his teammates followed suit, scoring three more unanswered touchdowns. Quarterback Steve Kaiser scored on a 1-yard run, then threw a 4-yard pass to Teddy Corwin, as DeSmet built a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Durron Neal finished DeSmet's scoring, on a 77-yard run. Zumwalt West's Ray Harris scored on an 8-yard run with 6:43 left in the third quarter.

The teams met in the sectionals for the third straight year. In 2007, DeSmet won 27-20 at home. Last year, Zumwalt West picked up its first playoff win, beating the Spartans 35-21.

The Spartans will host Jefferson City in the quarterfinals. The Jays defeated Francis Howell 37-14 on Friday in Jefferson City.

Oakville 31, SLUH 3— The Tigers dominated the Junior Billikens, thanks in part to the early heroics of running back Paul Taylor.

Oakville (8-3) opened the scoring on a 3-yard run by Taylor with 3:02 remaining in the first quarter. The Junior Billikens (5-6) then scored their only points of the night on a 25-yard field goal by Andrew Meyer with 8:35 left in the half. The Tigers put the game out of reach by halftime, extending the lead to 21-3 on Taylor's 70-yard run with 6:26 left and on a 12-yard pass from Joe Plassmeyer to Mike Cyliax.

Andrew Messmer kicked a 9-yard field goal near the end of the third quarter, and Oakville's Darnell Cooper finished the scoring with a 6-yard run.

SLUH was making its fourth consecutive playoff appearance. Oakville will host Lindbergh or Fox on Nov. 13.
