At halftime of Friday’s Class 5 District 5 game at Holt, the administration brought an old tradition out of mothballs to Soby Field when a flaming W was lit with kerosene behind one end zone to signify the days when Holt was the only Wentzville High School.
Well, sorry to say it, but there’s a new kid in town — sort of — as Timberland came across town and continued a tradition of its own in beating the rival Indians for the third straight time to capture the district title. The Wolves shut out the Indians 33-0.
Don’t tell the Wolves’ star that this had anything more to do than a team clinching its district and solidifying it place in the state playoffs, though.
"This really wasn’t about us beating them for the rivalry, that doesn’t matter," Timberland running back Jermaine Hill said. "This was about coming out and doing our jobs to take the district. We did that."
Most specifically with a little help from his friends, Hill did that.
All he did was rush the ball for 237 yards and three scores and catch another scoring pass from quarterback Chase Cresong.
"Jermaine is a big-play guy and if you get him the ball in space, he’s going to score," said Timberland coach Craig Collins. "We were hoping to get the ball off the coin flip because we felt that would present the best field conditions of the night and then do something with it."
All Timberland (9-1) did was streak to a two-play, 74-yard drive that totalled 24 seconds.
First Hill opened the game with a 33-yard run from scrimmage and next he followed that up with a 41-yard touchdown catch and run from Cresong with 11:36 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0 after Derek Rehagen’s extra point.
"My line did some really special things for me tonight," Hill said. "To have a fullback out there like Haleem Rayford opening holes up for me makes it really easy."
Timberland began its next scoring drive with 3:03 left in the first quarter at the Holt 44 after the special teams unit blocked a punt.
Hill put an end to the eight-play drive when he rambled in from 9 yards out with 1:07 left in the opening quarter to make it 13-0.
The Wolves went up 19-0 when Hill rushed for his second score of the game and third total when he scored form 34 yards out with 3:39 left before halftime to make it 19-0.
"They are a heck of a football team," said Holt coach Chris Shields. "Tonight, they were the better team. We just have got to learn from it, get better, keep working and move on."
Timberland added two second-half scores for good measure.
First, Rayford plunged in from 1 yard out to make it 25-0 and a Hill two-point conversion made it 27-0 with 5:25 left in the third quarter and Hill put the icing on top of the cake with an 84-yard scoring run with 7:36 left in the game.
"Our kids just wanted this game and the district title," Collins said. "They wanted that bye game (in the playoffs). We knew what we were playing for so we came out and got it done."
Nick Grubbs led the Holt offense with 88 yards on the ground but the potential face-off between Hill and Holt running back Terrence Tate never materialized as Tate only collected three early carries due to a lingering ankle injury.
"He was hurt and we kept him out of practice early this week," Shields said. "He tried to see if it could go tonight and it didn’t happen."
Another positive sign for Timberland was the return of University of Missouri recruit Nick Demien on the offensive line. Demien had missed the entire season to this point after breaking his leg at the jamboree.
"If you can put a guy like that out there who can handle whoever is across from them on the field, you definitely increase your odds," Collins said. "It was nice to see him in there."
With the win, Timberland will now get 10 days off before opening Class 5 playoff action at home Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. against the yet-to-be-determined winner of a regional game next Wednesday between runner-up teams from district 3 and 4.
