MEHLVILLE — A week after facing one of the area's top passing attacks in Vianney, the Webster Groves defense was looking forward to the challenge of facing Chaminade's standout running back, Rob Standard, Friday night.

By the end of the night, the Statesmen defenders left Mehlville High School's Jack Jordan Stadium smiling after holding Standard to 42 yards in an impressive 30-7 victory to claim the Class 5, District 2 championship.

"This week we knew it was going to be on the linebackers," Webster Groves middle linebacker Jason Meehan said. "We took that as a huge challenge. We wanted to be the team that would shut them all the way down. We want to prove we're that defense, we're the defense you're scared to play, that you don't want to play on Friday nights. I think we definitely proved a point."

Webster Groves (9-0), the No. 1 team in Class 5 and ranked second among area large schools, had impressive performances from several offensive players. Quarterback Derrick Dilworth completed 12 of 16 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown, backup quarterback Desi Brown rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore wide receiver Demetrius Robinson caught seven passes for 93 yards.

But it was the defense, led by Meehan's 11 tackles and a sack, that stole the show with its performance on Standard, who entered the game with back-to-back 2,000 yard seasons and 58 touchdowns over that time.

"We talked about you could do a great job on that kid and he could still have 150-200 yards," Webster coach Cliff Ice said. "He ended up with 40-something yards. That's unbelievable. Those kids did a great job."

Standard, who had 2,030 rushing yards in his first nine games this season, earned his 42 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown on 17 carries.

"They did a nice job," Chaminade coach Doug Taylor said. "We were trying to do some different things and not use everything tonight since we might, hopefully, see them a little on down the line. But they obviously did a nice job stopping the run. I thought we threw it pretty well. It is what it is."

Chaminade (7-3) will advance to the playoffs as the District 2 runner-up and play Summit (3-7), the runner-up in District 1, on Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. Webster Groves will have a bye and then play Eureka, the District 1 champion, the following Monday, Nov. 9.
