St. Louis County — Fox sophomore Nick Bartollota booted a 30-yard field goal in overtime, lifting the visiting Warriors to a 31-28 victory over previously unbeaten Lindbergh in Class 6 sectional action Friday night.
The Warriors (9-2) advance to play next Friday in a quarterfinal at Oakville (8-3).
In overtime, Lindbergh (10-1) had the ball first but failed to score. Fox managed to get one first down before setting up for the game-winning kick from Bartollota.
Both teams made fourth-quarter comebacks to send the game to overtime.
Down 21-14 after three quarters, Lindbergh came up with a 14-play drive lasting 6 minutes, 59 seconds. The Flyers' Tim Hamm-Bey scored on a 5-yard run with 3:34 to play. But Fox's David Jenkins blocked the extra point as the Warriors still led 21-20.
Lindbergh's defense responded with three consecutive negative-yardage plays, including a sack from Tony Robinson. It was sack No. 14 for Robinson, making him Lindbergh's single-season sack leader.
Hamm-Bey returned a short punt 16 yards to the Fox 20. Three plays later, the Flyers' Grant Krueger picked up his first varsity touchdown, scoring on a 4-yarder to put the Flyers on top. Following a two-point pass from Kyle Portell to Will Spitzfaden, the Flyers were up 28-21 with 1:06 left.
But Fox responded with a drive of its own, tying the score on a 7-yard pass from Bobby Mahoney to Jimmy Brewer with 17 seconds left in regulation.
The Warriors lined up to go for two, but movement on the line and a 5-yard penalty left Fox coach Nick Gianino with no choice but to have Bartollota kick the extra point and send the game to overtime.
The Warriors grabbed the lead in a mistake-filled first half as D.J. Chambers scored from 5 yards out on the first play of the second quarter. Chambers ran for 30 of the 40 yards on the drive, which included a pass-interference call. The drive, which started at the Lindbergh 40, came after a wind-thwarted Flyers punt resulted in a net loss of eight yards.
Fox regained possession a couple of minutes later when a shotgun snap over the head of Portell was recovered by Fox's Sean Raymond at the Lindbergh 37. Eight plays later, Mahoney froze Lindbergh's defense with a play-action fake and then hooked up with Mike Rademacher for an 11-yard touchdown that put the Warriors on top with 7:21 left in the first half.
Lindbergh came to life late in the half, moving 71 yards on seven plays to cut the Fox lead in half. The drive, which featured a 20-yard run from Krueger and 22-yard pass from Portell to Sam Smith, was capped on a 1-yard scoring run by Eric Schwartz with 1:24 to play before halftime.
