Two talent-rich teams have decided to play Red Rover for the 2010-2011 sports seasons.
Beginning next fall, Eureka will move from the Suburban South Conference to the Suburban West. Coming over to replace Eureka in the Sub South will be Kirkwood.
Eureka Athletic Director Jason Green said the decision was voted on by the conference's athletic directors on Oct. 8.
The reason behind the switch has mostly to due with the two schools' enrollment.
Eureka's is rapidly rising while Kirkwood's has been hovering at the same number for a handful of years.
Green estimates the school's enrollment at 1,883.
"We are growing and continuing to grow," Green said. "The move definitely presents a challenge."
Kirkwood Athletic Director Jeff Townsend said the school has an enrollment of 1,630.
"One thing that drives scheduling is enrollment," Townsend said. "In our situation, in some cases we had 700-800 less students than our competition. That can really make it tough, especially in certain sports."
Townsend thought that, from a football standpoint, the Suburban South will be more rugged for the Pioneers but they should be able to flex their muscle more in other sports.
"I think it will help in sports like baseball, softball and basketball," he said.
The Pioneers will rejoin arch rival Webster Groves in the Sub South and will renew former rivalries from when they last played in the league.
"It was the same thing six years ago when we lost a lot of rivals like Parkway Central and Parkway West," Townsend said. "Now we get those back but then lose the likes of Lindbergh."
Neither programs are complete strangers to their new homes.
"Will it have an impact? It's hard to tell," Green said. "We already play Marquette, Lafayette and Parkway South in a lot of sports already."
So the same should hold true when making out the non-conference portion of the schedules in the future.
"We will continue to try and play them in non-conference games," Green said. "I don't see that it will change too much."
