Two of the area's best soccer teams squared off Saturday afternoon at CBC.
The game, featuring the host Cadets against Metro Catholic Conference rival Vianney, was competitive but unspectacular as CBC came away with a 1-0 victory.
"We got one and they didn't," CBC coach Terry Michler said after the Cadets improved to 20-2-3 overall and to 2-1 in MCC play. "Under the circumstances, we'll take it."
The Cadets, who were without injured senior starters Ryan Tinsley and Sean Kuster, are 15-0-1 in their last 16 matches. Vianney (14-3-3 and 3-1) entered the game having won six in a row since falling 3-0 to CBC in the finals of the CYC/Bob Guelker Memorial Tournament.
Vianney's Jon Roeckle nearly scored less than a minute into the match, but his shot went off the post. The Griffins applied some good early pressure, but failed to capitalize. "We gave them a better game this time, but again, we have to find a way to finish on those early chances,'' Vianney coach Dave Gauvain said. "It almost seemed like we were surprised to be that open so early in the game and then just couldn't put it away.
"Against a lesser opponent, maybe you'll find a way later. But against a top team like CBC, you have to finish, especially early in the game.''
The Cadets came up with the match's lone goal about 12½ minutes into the game on a nice second effort from senior Nick Kidd. After getting his first shot blocked, Kidd stayed on the ball and eventually powered his way through a couple of tackle attempts. He was able to gain control about six yards out, dribble by Vianney keeper Matt McKenna and then slide the ball into the open net.
"A typical Nick Kidd goal," Michler said. "The guy just works and works and works.''
Drew Duncan posted the CBC shutout.
Chaminade 1, SLUH 0 — In another key MCC match Saturday, the Red Devils' Alex Weber notched his second game-winning goal in less than 24 hours as Chaminade won at SLUH. Chaminade beat St. Dominic 1-0 in a Friday match. With the victory, the Red Devils wrap up the regular season at 18-3-3 and 3-1. SLUH (14-5-1 and 1-2) hosts CBC at 6 p.m. Thursday in the regular-season finale for both squads. If CBC wins, it will share the MCC title with Vianney and Chaminade.
