TOWN AND COUNTRY • The Whitfield soccer team was left with an empty feeling following the 2008 season.
With a loss to eventual state champion John Burroughs in districts last year, the Warriors failed to reach the postseason since 2000.
"You get used to having your season go on, so yeah, last year was a little different for us,’’ Whitfield coach Bill Daues said. "I know the kids, especially our eight seniors, are happy to have the opportunity to keep playing.’’
Whitfield knocked off visiting Principia 4-1 Thursday afternoon in the Class 1 District 3 title match. The Warriors (12-7-2) advance to play the Southern Boone-Missouri Military Academy winner in the quarterfinals Thursday at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton.
Principia finished 6-11-1.
Whitfield set the tone early, getting a pair of first-half goals from senior Kory Clawson. After the Panthers cut the lead to 2-1 on a early second-half goal from Austin Holmsley, the Warriors came right back as Matt Chabot scored to make it 3-1,
Freshman Nick Tobias closed out the scoring.
