Edwardsville, Triad play in supersectionals
By Joe Lyons
POST-DISPATCH

Cameron Lauchner leads Edwardsville in scoring with 16 goals and 14 assists.

The soccer teams from Edwardsville and Triad will hit the road for supersectional matches today. Both teams hope to make even longer trips later in the week.

Edwardsville (17-3-4) meets Blue Island Eisenhower (16-5-3) in a Class 3A match at Peoria Notre Dame at 7 p.m. today, while Triad (14-9-2) takes on Champaign Centennial (16-9-1) in a 3 p.m. Class 2A game at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The winners move on to state this weekend at North Central College in Naperville.

Last year's Class 3A runner-up, Edwardsville enters tonight's match on a 14-0-1 streak. The Tigers seek their seventh state trip; Edwardsville won the 2A title in 2000, was second in 1997, 2001 and 2008, and reached the 1995 and 2004 quarterfinals.

Edwardsville's attack is keyed by senior Cameron Lauchner (16 goals, 14 assists) and junior Sam Fink (13-3). Sophomore keeper Daniel Brennan has played in 12 shutouts and has a 0.53 goals-against average.

Like Edwardsville, Triad is on a roll, having won nine of 10 to earn a second consecutive supersectional appearance. The Knights, who lost 3-0 to eventual state runner-up Sacred Heart-Griffin in last year's sectional, have never been to state.

The Knights are led by coach Mike Villa, who guided Vianney to seven Missouri championships. Triad started 1-5-1 but turned around on the strong play of senior keeper Jake Teveer (9 shutouts, 0.92 GAA) and a balanced attack featuring Kyle Hoggatt (14 goals, 12 assists), Blake Thomas (9, 4) and Gus Wagner (8-5).
