Two of the area's best soccer teams, Metro Catholic Conference rivals CBC and Vianney, square off today at 1 p.m. in Class 3 quarterfinal action at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton.
Another MCC power, St. Louis University High, will meet McCluer North in the 3 p.m. match at A-B Center. North finished fourth in Class 3 a year ago.
Today's winners advance to the final four Nov. 20-21 at A-B Center.
Here's a look at today's matchups:
— CBC (23-4-3) is 2-0-1 against Vianney this season, having won 3-0 in the title game of the CYC/Bob Guelker Memorial Tournament and 1-0 at home in the teams' league match. The teams tied 1-1 in the CBC Tournament in early September. The Cadets are deep and solid from fourth-year starting keeper Drew Duncan (18 shutouts, 0.38 goals-against average) to defenders A.J Cochran, Ryan Tinlsey and Austin Tierney (seven goals, eight assists) to attackers Matt Hutchison (10 goals, nine assists), Sam Carenza (11 goals, four assists) and Sean Kuster (15 goals, seven assists). Vianney is a senior-laden squad led by Chris Garavaglia and John Howe in the back, Steve McAnany (seven goals, 14 assists) in the midfield and Jon Roeckle (15 goals, 16 assists) up top.
— After suffering heavy graduation losses again, SLUH (19-6-1) entered 2009 as an unknown, but the hard-working Junior Billikens have come on strong to win eight of their last 10. Top SLUH players include Pat Macauley (13 goals), Dominic Hewitt (11 goals), Richie Hoffman (seven goals, 11 assists) and defender Andrew Johnson. Last year's surprise team, McCluer North (18-6) has followed up on that strong finish with an even better season and a stronger all-around squad. Most of last year's top players — goalkeeper Ian McReynolds (11 shutouts), Cameron Poindexter (13 goals, 12 assists), Mike Wells (14 goals, eight assists), Josh Schulz (12 goals, 10 assists) and Zach Meyer (11 goals, 11 assists) — are back for another run at a state trip.
