The semifinals of the Msgr. Louis Meyer Division of the 55th annual CYC/Bob Guelker Memorial Soccer Tournament at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton will be an all-Metro Catholic Conference event.
In a rematch of last year's title game - won 1-0 by St. Louis University High - it'll be the Junior Billikens (8-2-1) against Vianney (7-1-3) in the Friday's 6 p.m. contest while Chaminade (12-1-1) squares off with CBC (8-2-2) in the 8 p.m. match.
Friday's winners will meet for the championship Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Chaminade and CBC earned their semifinal spots on Wednesday, completing 3-0 runs through pool play. The two teams met in a tight 1-0 game won by host Chaminade last Saturday afternoon.
Due to early-week weather problems, both SLUH and Vianney had to play Thursday night at A-B Center to close out their respective pool play. SLUH wrapped up a 3-0 run in Division A, posting a 5-1 victory over Duchesne (5-5). In the victory, the Junior Billikens received goals from Brysan Duvall, Joe Bettger, Dominic Hewitt, Richie Hoffman and Grant Welge.
In Division B, Vianney advanced with a 1-1 draw against Oakville (5-4-2). The Golden Griffins finished 2-0-1 in pool play while Oakville came in at 1-0-2. Dan Hummel scored Thursday for Vianney while Zach Klipsch had the goal for the Tigers.
In another Division B contest Thursday, Trinity (5-4-1) and Zumwalt West (4-5-2) played to a 1-1 draw.
Other CYC finals
In the other brackets of the 55th annual CYC/Guelker event:
_ Triad (4-6-2) and Lutheran South (5-4) square off Friday at 8 p.m. at A-B Center for the championship of the Msgr. Lloyd Sullivan Division. In the consolation game Friday at 6 p.m., it'll be St. Pius (6-3-1) versus Washington (1-11).
_ Highland (9-3) takes on Columbia (8-5-2) in the title match of the Father Charles Maxwell Division Saturday at 4 p.m. The consolation championship, also at 4 p.m. Saturday, will feature Archdiocesan Athletic Association rivals Kennedy (7-3) and Lutheran-St. Charles (6-4).
_ In the Msgr. Larry Walsh Cup Division, Columbia Rock Bridge (4-4) has secured one spot in Saturday's 6 p.m. final. The other spot will be decided Friday afternoon as Clayton (7-1-2) plays Waterloo (7-5-1) and Howell Central (9-1-1) takes on Northwest (2-8) in 4:30 p.m. games at A-B Center. Entering this final round of pool play, Clayton had seven points, followed by Howell Central (6) and Waterloo (5). Teams are awarded four points for a victory, two for a tie and one additional point for a shutout.
National Rankings
Chaminade is the area's lone nationally ranked squad; the Red Devils are 20th in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 and are No. 24 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.
The ESPN Rise rankings in Missouri feature Rockhurst, Chaminade, CBC, SLUH and Vianney.
The NSCAA Region VII rankings include Chaminade (No. 4), Belleville East (No. 8), CBC (No. 14) and SLUH (No. 15).
Big game in KC
A pair of nationally ranked squads squared off Wednesday evening as St. Thomas Aquinas knocked off Rockhurst 3-2 in the Big Dawg Tournament.
The loss snapped a 23-game shutout streak for the Hawklets, who have won back-to-back Missouri Class 3 championships. Aquinas, of Overland Park, Kan., won the class 5A title in Kansas a year ago.
