CREVE COEUR — The St. Louis University High soccer team used an ex-defender to score the game-winning goal and their No. 5 goalkeeper to preserve the lead in a 2-0 victory over host Chaminade on Saturday afternoon in the Class 3 District 6 championship game.

SLUH (18-6-1) advances to take on Francis Howell North (17-5-1) in the 8 p.m. sectional Tuesday at Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton.

Chaminade finished 20-4-3.

The Junior Bills took the lead 13½ minutes into the second half as Grant Welge chipped the ball to Dominic Hewitt in the corner. Hewitt's cross was headed toward the far corner by Pat Macauley for the 1-0 lead. It was the team-leading 13th goal of the season for Macauley, a transplanted defender.

"It's been an awful lot of fun," Macauley said of the position change. "I just try to work hard, hold the ball and do what I can to help my team."

Chaminade, a 1-0 winner at SLUH in the teams' league match on Oct. 24, turned up the pressure in the game's final minutes and created a handful of decent chances. The best one came with about 10½ minutes to play as the Red Devils' Jimmy Meyerkord came up with a quick turn in the box and ripped a shot toward the upper-left corner.

But SLUH keeper David Kirner managed to get a hand to the shot, tipping it over the cross bar.

"David was our No. 5 keeper, but we put him in there six or seven games ago because he's so athletic," SLUH coach Charlie Martel said. "That definitely paid off for us today."

With Chaminade pushing forward, SLUH scored a late insurance goal as Hewitt converted a pass from Ben Emnett.
