For the second time in three seasons, the Oakville Tigers will have to settle for a second-place state softball trophy.

The Tigers fell 2-1 to Jefferson City on Saturday afternoon in the Class 4 championship game at Heritage Park Softball Complex in St. Joseph.

Jefferson City finished 25-1; Oakville wraps up a 23-6 season.

In 2007, the 30-0 Tigers lost 1-0 to Lafayette in the Class 4 title game in Columbia. Five Oakville players — current seniors Maggie Ruckenbrod, Marissa Simon and Mackenzie Madigan and juniors Remy Edwards and Julie Kernen — were starters in both title-game losses.

The Jays, who suffered their only loss this season against Parkway South (3-0) on Sept. 25, came up with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh Saturday. In the bottom of the inning, Oakville's Danie Farnam led off with a walk and scored on a two-out double by Ruckenbrod, the state's career hits' leader.

But Jays' pitcher Mackenzie Bowden got the next Oakville hitter to fly out to end the game.

Oakville was outhit 6-1 and committed two errors in the title game. Bowden struck out eight and walked seven, finishing 23-1. Edwards (17-4) allowed six hits and two unearned runs, striking out nine and walking two.

Whitni Howell had a pair of hits to lead the Jays, who pick up their first state softball title after placing fourth in 1999 and 2002, third in 1981 and 1997 and second in 2004 and 2006.

In the third-place game, Kearney (29-3) came away with a 2-0 victory over Parkway Central (22-9). Kearney scored single runs in the second and third innings, getting a 12-strikeout no-hitter from pitcher Kat Barrow.
