Vianney, Mehlville advance to district final
STLTODAY PREP SPORTS

At Lindbergh on Monday, Vianney and Mehlville each won one-goal games to advance to the Wednesday’s Class 3 District 2 championship game.

Oakville, the fourth seed, gave top-seeded Vianney all it could handled before succumbing 1-0 on a goal by the Griffins’ Jason Grant in the 63rd minute.

“Coach told us at halftime to follow up our shots,” Grant said. “John Howe was lining up a shot, and I just tried to get onside and follow it up. It just took a couple deflections. I was there, the goalie bobbled it, and I put it in.”

It marked the third time in three meetings that Vianney defeated Oakville this season.

“We knew it was going to be a one-goal game,” Vianney coach Dave Gauvain said. “I thought we did a nice job defensively all over the field denying them real quick counters and long balls."

Mehlville’s struck early against Lindbergh on a head goal by Zachary Littrell less than two minutes into the game.

Lindbergh’s Hrvoje Bagaric tied the game in the 38th minute, but it took only 5 ½ minutes for Mehlville regain the lead on Aris Nukic’s goal.

“To get the goal early and put them behind the eight ball was huge, and then you respond to a late goal by them very quickly,” Harper said. “You can’t say enough about the effort.”
