Hilltoppers' offense subdues Comanches

Joliet Catholic running back Ty Issac drags Cahokia defenders with him during Saturday's playoff game at Cahokia.

CAHOKIA — The Joliet Catholic football team had a simple plan of attack going into Saturday's playoff game at Cahokia: keep the ball away from the Comanches' playmakers as much as possible.

That plan worked to perfection as Joliet Catholic put on a clinic of ball-control offense in its 35-12 victory over Cahokia in a Class 5A second-round game.

"They just beat us on the offensive and defensive lines," Cahokia coach Antwyne Golliday said. "When we did have kids in position, we didn't make the tackles. Offensively, we just didn't get it going for some kind of reason. That was a good team."

The Comanches (9-2), who entered the game averaging 27.3 points per contest and allowing just 6.4 points, struggled offensively, defensively and with special teams for all four quarters.

"We didn't do what we usually do," said Cahokia wide receiver-defensive back Jimmie Hunt. "We didn't commit. We didn't commit to anything. Our line was unstable. Our defensive backs, some of us were unstable. Our wide receivers, we were unstable. All around, it was a messed up game for us."

Joliet Catholic (9-2) controlled the game at the line of scrimmage. On offense, the Hilltoppers used their double-wing formation, running 62 times for 347 yards and averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

Sophomore Malin Jones led the way with 20 carries for 130 yards and a touchdown. He also took a shuffle pass on a fake field goal and turned it into an 11-yard touchdown. Josh Ferguson added 117 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

"I was real pleased with the fact that we were able to move the chains, control the ball, shorten the game and give them less touches on offense," Joliet Catholic coach Dan Sharp said.

Cahokia trailed 7-6 late in the first quarter after Patrick Ivy's 22-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Khyree Beckley, but the Comanches weren't able to score again in the first half.

Joliet Catholic scored twice in the second quarter — on a 47-yard run by Ferguson and a 3-yard run by Jones — and led 21-6 at halftime.

The Comanches cut the lead to 21-12 with 3 minutes, 39 seconds left in the third quarter when Hunt, who is also the team's punter, turned a fake punt into a 75-yard touchdown run down the sideline.

But Cahokia could not capitalize after that. Joliet Catholic scored twice in the fourth quarter, on a 10-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Anthony Maddie to Alex Kolodziej and an 8-yard run by Jordan Lyles.
