SPRINGFIELD, mo. — MICDS sophomore Hannah Wille beat Visitation junior Sammi Hornbarger in the clinching match of the Missouri Class 1 team tennis tournament Thursday.
Wille and Hornbarger played again in the individual phase of the tournament Friday and the result was the same as Wille won a 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinal match at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
"Sammi is a really consistent player who has a good forehand," Wille said. "I just tried to be as consistent as I could against her."
Wille broke Hornbarger at love in the first game, then held serve for a 2-0 lead. But Hornbarger took four straight games for a first set advantage. Wille answered with four games to capture the first set, then made it seven straight by winning the first three of the second set. But Hornbarger force Wille to hold serve at 5-4 to close the match.
Wille moves on to today's semifinals against Notre Dame de Sion's Amy Barnthouse, a returning state singles medalist.

John Burroughs sophomore Sydney Lehman is the other area player in the Class 1 singles semifinals. Lehman lost just three games in her two matches Friday. She will play Kate Sims of Barstow in the semis.
It's an all-St. Louis final four in Class 1 doubles. Visitation freshmen Jocelyn Koester and Brianna Menalascino will face Courtney Cassity and Carly Cassity of MICDS in one semifinal. The other pits Christine Schlafly and Lauren DeRousse of Westminster Christian Academy against Katy Barenholtz and Katie Smith of John Burroughs.
Kirkwood senior Rachel Stuhlmann is the area's only remaining player in the winner's bracket in Class 2 singles. She rolled through her two matches Friday, defeating Kelsey Kinderknecht of Rock Bridge 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and then beating Lauren Davis of Parkway Central, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Stuhlmann today faces Joplin's Rachel Lazenby, who is undefeated this season.
Two St. Louis teams are still alive in Class 2 doubles. St. Joseph Academy seniors Katie Thome and Madeline Jolly will play in one semifinal against Leslee Feldhaus and Abby Fish of Liberty. Eureka senior Marcia Klopf and junior Lindy McBratney beat Parkway West's Kim Birenbaum and Melanie Mauer, 7-6, 6-4, and will play Carlee Rozell and Mackenzie Rozell of Kickapoo in the semifinals.
