BETHALTO — When the Mater Dei girls volleyball team is ready to play a match, the Knights have a tendency to make short work of their opponents.
That's what happened Thursday night, when Mater Dei needed only 31 minutes to destroy Mattoon 25-10, 25-8 in the championship match of the Civic Memorial Sectional.
Mater Dei upped its record to 33-6 with its 20th sectional title and will face Champaign Centennial (34-5) Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Chatham Glenwood Supersectional. Centennial defeated Chatham Glenwood 26-24, 24-26, 25-20 Thursday night to claim the Lincoln Sectional title.
Mattoon ended 24-11. Reynae Hutchinson, daughter of coach Susan Hutchinson, and Shannon Lowry each had two kills for the Green Wave.
"Once we got a big run, we were all pumped up and we knew we could keep going and we knew we could push hard," said Mater Dei middle hitter Tabatha Albers, who ended with three kills. "... We just keep pushing and we don't want them to come back in a game. We just want to keep striving to push to 25 points."
Which is what the Knights did, jumping to a 10-1 lead in both games.
